Cold Brew at Home

Who wants to head out on a steamy summer day with a hot drink? What you want is a tall iced latte, or maybe a frozen cappuccino. Knowing the basics of cold brewed coffee will help you make your coffeehouse favorites at home.

Cold brewing is a simple technique. You pour cold water over ground beans and steep for 12-24 hours in the refrigerator. Unlike brewing hot coffee, the flavor is slowly drawn from the ground beans, leaving the bitterness behind.

Use my recipe below as a guideline. If you prefer a stronger base for your coffee drinks, use less water. Alternatively, dilute your drinks with ice or your favorite milk or creamer.

INGREDIENTS:

1 Cup coarsely ground coffee

5 Cups cold water

EQUIPMENT:

2 Large glass containers

Large measuring cup

Fine mesh strainer

Coffee filters or cheesecloth

Funnel (optional)

PREPARATION:

Place 1 cup of ground coffee in a large glass container, and cover with 5 cups of cold water. Stir to combine.

Refrigerate for 12-24 hours. (Note: the longer you brew, the more bitterness is possible.)

Using a fine mesh strainer lined with a coffee filter, strain coffee into large bowl or measuring cup.

Pour coffee from measuring cup into clean jar using a filter-lined funnel.

Enjoy as is, or with your favorite milk or creamer.
